mwah. Philosophy

Work is a fundamental human right.

The right to contribute.

To belong.

To be useful.

It’s a simple clear philosophy that work, whatever the work, is an honourable contribution to society and community that is meaningful to all of us, and sometimes even gives us meaning. It’s not a balance to our lives, but rather it is an important part of our lives. And because it’s done by humans for other humans, it ought to be as human as it possibly can be.

mwah. values

There are the five things we all know ‘make work absolutely human.

  1. CARE
  2. Individuality welcomed into community
  3. Generous honest communication
  4. Clarity powering through complexity
  5. Bravely doing what matters

CARE

It starts with CARE. You have to care about yourself, each other and the work you do together. We break CARE into Connected, Authentic, Respectful and Empathetic, but even as the simple “CARE” it matters most.

Individuality welcomed in community

We all know how to fake ‘fitting in’ but we’re so much better when we genuinely feel we belong – that we’re welcome. That we can bring our whole selves to work and feel part of the community.

Generous honest communication

Honest communication that we trust is a baseline. Take that up a notch to generous honest communication and things start humming. Telling each other everything we need to know, in a way that is generously looking for understanding, while in equal measure seeking to understand.

Clarity powering through complexity

We live in a complicated complex world, and we’re all seeking to understand. Simplicity comes from understanding complexity and finding the essence. Clarity comes from powering through complexity and getting to the heart of things. Purpose and value amongst all the detail.

Bravely doing what matters

When we’re at our best, we are courageous and brave, bring our best to work, and throw it all on the table. This is where good intent and nice words land in action. Individually, and together, we do what matters, and we do it the right way.

These five things are woven deep into our philosophy of making work absolutely human.

They’re in everything we do.

They’re who we are.

mwah. 2 core ideas and 5 signature processes

Whether you’re leading a business or working in one, there are two big core ideas you need to take care of and then five simple processes you need to get right.

Do that, and the people side of your business and your work takes care of itself.

Add these to the Values and you’ll be well on the way to making work absolutely human.

The core ideas are Culture and Wellness.

Culture determines everything. Culture is at the heart of business. It’s the way we work together – with each other, with our customers, and with the community every day. There are simple processes to work on culture but great culture is not by accident. It’s consistent words, actions and leadership over the long term, and if you get it right, it’s worth its weight in gold – for the business and for every individual.

Wellness determines contribution. If we’re at our best, we can give our best. It’s about our physical energy as well as our emotional and mental confidence. It’s about individuals being accountable and businesses proactively supporting.

You must get culture and wellness right to get the work right too.

They’re the foundation for a great business – for the business, for the team, for customers, and for everyone who deals with you.

The people side of businesses work best when Culture and Wellness are firstly highly valued and cared about, and secondly, where they’re woven into all the people stuff at every opportunity.

The ‘people stuff’ is actually five simple clear processes. We call them the ‘mwah. signature processes’.

The five mwah. signature processes are

  • Change
  • Recruitment
  • Performance
  • Development
  • Reward, Recognition and Appreciation

Here’s why they matter most.

Change

What it is

Everything changes. Businesses change and grow. Individuals change and grow too. Moving forward, progressing and being part of the future is essential for human beings. All of us.

Why it matters to a business

All good businesses grow and change, keeping up to date and moving with the times. To do that we need a way of designing and making change that takes everyone with you. It needs to start with the ‘why’ of a change, but with the change we are dealing with today, it also needs to become part of the core DNA of a business – the ability to change easily and when required.

Why it matters to individuals

Everyone loves the change they own and the best approach to change is owned by everyone. No one wants to be forced to “change” and especially to be “changed” unexpectedly. They want to be in the know, understanding the change and the ‘why’ behind it. And they need to be part of the process and part of the success when it’s over.

Why the mwah. signature way is unique

The mwah. change model is unique in that it’s about embedding ‘changeability’ into the culture of the business. It doesn’t start and end with change management. Instead, it’s starts with receptivity and support, and ends with the team prepared for the next change.

Recruitment

What it is

Recruitment is about how you find people for your team, how you attract them, how you employ them, and how you get them settled in. AND it’s about how you re-recruit them over and over every time there is new or different work to do

Why it matters to a business

Recruitment determines the team you have for today and tomorrow. The matching piece is obvious, but thinking forward and working on on-boarding, developing and keeping your big promises, is just as critical. You’re not recruiting one person, you’re recruiting a critical part of your whole team.

Why it matters to individuals

When you’re looking for a new job, or new work, you want to choose well. You know what you want in life and you need work to add to your plans. You want to know the whole story – good, bad and even ugly – and the people you’ll be working with. You want to make a great choice for today, and you want future plans working well too.

Why the mwah. signature way is unique

mwah.’s recruitment process is very simple, and its two sided – it works for the business and for the individual. It talks about the work to be done now, the work in the future, and the development to do different work. AND, it talks to being part of the team.

Performance

What it is

Performance is about setting expectations and letting people know they’re doing well. Both at an individual level and also across a team.

Why it matters to a business

Performance matters to the business because that’s how you engage your team in the work to be done, the customer needs and future plans. You’re setting the tone, the standard and bringing the culture to life. Everyone knows what’s expected and how they’re travelling against those expectations.

Why it matters to individuals

Performance matters to individuals because it lets you know what’s expected, what the measurements are, and how you’re doing against those expectations, as individuals and as a team. Its where you get feedback to ensure all is going well, or how it could be even better.

Why the mwah. signature way is unique

The mwah. Performance process is super unique for two reasons. Firstly, because it’s so simple, and aims at driving great conversations – open, clear and solely aimed at doing some great work and making sure everyone is on the same page. Secondly, it works for individuals and teams. You can simply take the same process and ideas, and move them from one person to the team. It quickly becomes the language of performance – for the business, for the individuals, and for teams. It can be leader-led or the team can do it themselves.

Development

What it is

Talent and Development is about ensuring the business is developing people to be the best they can be, and equally are ready as the business grows and changes.

Why it matters to a business

For the business, talent is about developing every person to the best of their ability to ensure they can make a great contribution. It’s about spotting people’s talents and potential to do more or possibly, different work, and seeing where that matches your business needs. It’s about an investment in the future. And it’s about a mindset – the best development is from ‘doing’, so it’s about using the work you have in your business to lift everyone on your team.

Why it matters to individuals

From the individual side, development is about making sure you keep up to date in skills, ability and technology. It’s about knowing what’s working well for you and where you need to improve. It’s about making sure you’re working somewhere that is investing in you, and not leaving you behind. That said not all development is ‘at work’. Owning your own development means you can add in all the lessons and learning you’re getting from the rest of your life.

Why the mwah. signature way is unique

The mwah. Talent and Development process is unique because firstly, it’s so simple, and secondly, because its two-sided. It works for the business, fairly looking across everyone on the team, and making sure they’re ready to do great work today and tomorrow. It works for individuals because it lets them own their own development, and keep it moving both inside the current business and job, and also outside, across employers.

Reward, Recognition and Appreciation

What it is

When we talk “rewards”, we talk “pay”, of course. But there’s more to it than that. We need to look at it holistically. We need to understand what is important to each individual. We need to consider hours, development, learning, opportunities, promotions, challenges, workspaces, flexibility, leadership, and of course,  saying “thank you” – showing appreciation.

Why it matters to a business

Obviously, rewards matter to businesses because they determine the cost of all the people on your team. However, they’re also a very important part of your culture. Do you appreciate people? And if so, how so? And is that appreciation relevant to each person?

Why it matters to individuals

Fair pay is a good place to start. No one wants to be treated badly. Equally, though for all of us, there’s more to work than just money. We need development, opportunities to do more challenging work, we need our best work to be appreciated, a leader than cares, a nice place to work in, and we need to be connected to the future.

Why the mwah. signature way is unique

The mwah. way of looking at Rewards, Recognition and Appreciation is unique because it looks at everything you should be considering from both sides. Sure, there’s the rules so everyone is treated fairly and legally, but there’s so much more to be considered. If you can really tap into what matters to people, Rewards, Recognition and Appreciation can become a unique feature of a business and why people like working there.

We have a simple set of cards that keep the mwah. Values, the two core ideas of Culture and Wellness and the five signature processes all handy in one spot.
