Creating policies with concern for the individual well-being and promoting a culture that encourages caring for each other are important first steps.
The development of a workplace health promotion agenda that is not solely focused on drug and alcohol use, one that looks at improving the overall health of employees, helps with this. This is because, in general, healthy lifestyles are not compatible with problematic substance use. Incorporating drug and alcohol use within the context of health concerns, in general, may be an effective way of motivating employee change with respect to substance use. This may also help reduce the stigma associated with problematic substance use, and thus encourage employees to come forward when they need help.
