Pay is one of the baselines of work. We all expect and want to be paid fairly and not to have to ask about pay except on very rare occasions. Pay should relate to the work and the role, not to the person’s personal financial needs or plans. Conversations about fair pay are some of the most difficult a leader can have, and despite that, they can often be the most common.  Almost always, these are initiated by employees to discuss a personal perception that they are underpaid.
