Encourage
No matter how comfortable the environment or how kind your approach, it is normal for people to sometimes feel nervous in an interview setting. As a leader, it is up to you to support the person at the opposite end of the table to be great and perform at their best.
Don’t be afraid to jump in and support a person if they are failing. Simple acts like restating questions or helping people get their answers back on track will support the candidate to answer the questions you want to know more about and boost their confidence within this process. This will create a context where you can learn about the “real” person.
Remember, the best person for the job may not always be the person who presents most smoothly and confidently at the interview. While this can be important, it should not be the sole criterion for success.
