Reference checking is really important because it helps you decide if you are going to offer someone a job or not. It makes sense, then, that when the stakes are so high, there are a few things to be mindful of.
Not everyone will be happy to provide a reference
Some organisations have a blanket ‘no reference check’ policy. Don’t interpret this as a sign the candidate was not highly regarded. The former leader may not have a choice, as they may have been instructed by their company to not provide any reference checks.
